ROW80 Check-In #16 – February 24, 2019

row80logocopyLate again.

It’s been a very rough week.

I’m not sure if it’s the time of year or the unexpected, week-long layoff from work, but I’ve really been “off” lately.

I’ve been incredibly sleep deprived, getting only about 4 hours of sleep at a stretch, and up early no matter what time I went to bed, and that’s been really messing with me. I work 3rd shift, and the sudden schedule shift this week did a number on me.

For some reason, I got into a really manic mood, and spent most of my time cleaning and re-organizing my workshop. I built an outfeed table and a router extension for my table-saw, built a drill press table, several clamps, a vice, a swing arm for my shop monitor, and just generally lived in my workshop all week.

And for the first time since late September, I went more than a day without writing anything.

That really got me down, but for some reason, I just couldn’t get motivated to sit down and put words on the screen. Given that I had time off, I should have taken the opportunity to try and get further along in my first draft, but no matter what, I just couldn’t do it.

I’m not sure if it’s just because I’m burnt out and needed a break, or if it’s the sleep deprivation or a combination of both, but as I said, it hasn’t been a good week, especially for writing.

I went back to work last night, and I did manage to get in my 1000 words for today, so here’s hoping that a return to a more normal schedule for me will get me back on an even keel.

Otherwise, I have a really awesome shop now, and I think that I’m finally on the other side of “Carmageddon”, as most of the work on all three of my vehicles have been finished.

Hopefully, I’ll have some better news to post on the next Check-In.

So here’s this Check-In’s Goal Breakdown…

Goal #1 – Finish My First Draft

I’ve only written another 2200 words since the last check-in, and as I said, I blew off several days of writing. I’m hoping to get back to my consistent 1000 words per day output now that I’m back to work.

Since this Round began, I’ve written about 54,200 words, and the draft is now just over 144,200 words in total.

Goal #2 – Write At Least Three Articles/Essays

Still haven’t gotten around to this one yet, because I’m saving this one for when I’m done the first draft and want to take a break from it. Though I am considering taking some time off from the first draft to work on at least one small writing project, just for a change of pace.

Goal #3 – Start Editing

I still haven’t started on this one, either. I won’t edit until the draft is done. I’m a horrible self-editor, so I’m really trying to not go back and edit while I write. I’m saving all of the editing for when the draft is done.

Goal #4 – Read at least Two Books – Accomplished

I’m still reading John Ringo’s A Hymn Before Battle, a military sci-fi novel. I haven’t read much of it since last Check-In. I was busy in my shop.

So, that’s it for me this Check-In

Hope all is well with you.

  1. I worked nights for years any major schedule change was hard to deal with, and even worse on lack of sleep. Lately I’ve been trying GABA, an amino acid that seems to help many people sleep better. Perhaps it could help.
