ROW80 Check-In #15 – February 20, 2019

row80logocopyAnother post a couple hours late 🙂 This layoff week has really messed with my schedule.

I‘ve had a good few days. I spent a good deal of this week in my workshop, organizing it and building some fun woodworking jigs and accessories that will (and already have) come in very handy.

I’m hoping that the car situation, that I’ve dubbed Carmageddon will be mostly done by the weekend. It would be my luck to have all three cars develop problems in the same two weeks. I’ve had a heck of a time working with everyone’s schedules to make sure everyone had a vehicle to use while one was in the shop. Here’s hoping that’s it for car repairs for a while.

I have to admit, I faltered a bit on my writing goals. I got caught up on fun projects in the shop for a couple of days and didn’t hit my 1000/day goal. I did have a lot of fun, and I’ve been trying to make up for that these last couple of days.

I’ve just been trying to plow through the writing lately. The story is moving toward the climax, but though I have that bit mostly planned out, getting to a point where everything is set up for the climax to begin is getting to be a real slog. I suppose I should have planned that out a bit better, but there are so many things that still have to happen before I can start the climax. Hopefully, I can get through the rest of the build-up soon and finally get to the push to the end.

Other than all of that, it’s been a rather uneventful few days.

So here’s this Check-In’s Goal Breakdown

Goal #1 – Finish My First Draft

I’ve written another 2500 words since the last check-in, not keeping up with my 1000 words per day goal for a couple of days, so the output has been less than I‘d have liked. I have written every day, though.

Since this Round began, I’ve written about 52,000 words, and the draft is now just over 142,500 words in total.

Goal #2 – Write At Least Three Articles/Essays

Still haven’t gotten around to this one yet, because I’m saving this one for when I’m done the first draft and want to take a break from it. Though I am considering taking some time off from the first draft to work on at least one small writing project, just for a change of pace.

Goal #3 – Start Editing

I still haven’t started on this one, either. I won’t edit until the draft is done. I’m a horrible self-editor, so I’m really trying to not go back and edit while I write. I’m saving all of the editing for when the draft is done.

Goal #4 – Read at least Two Books – Accomplished

I’m still reading John Ringo’s A Hymn Before Battle, a military sci-fi novel. I haven’t read much of it since last Check-In. I was busy in my shop 😉
So, that’s it for me this Check-In

Hope all is well with you.

  1. Good luck pushing through the slog and getting to that climax! 52k in the round is still a great result, even if you are a few days behind.

  2. Congrats on finishing reading two books, and great job working through the distraction of a fun side project to still get some writing done! Balancing between two favorite hobbies can be the best and worst problem to have!

  3. I always slow down near the climax of a story. I think I don’t want to let go, so I hold on and dawdle.

I just plan for it now.

I’ve also discovered that my creative flow is like the tide. It has ebbs, surges, and slack times. Sometimes I devour input. Other times, I give a lot of focus to other interests. And sometimes I can’t type fast enough to get the words out.

Creativity tends to feed creativity, even when you’re creative in the wood shop and not the novel. I suspect there will be a wonderful wordy payoff for that indulgence, eventually!
