Sleep Deprived but Still Alive – December 22, 2018

This post is a day late, so sorry to all of you expectantly sitting on your hands waiting for it 😉

This week has run me ragged, and I’ve been paying for that these last few days.

Running around trying to find the perfect Xmas gifts for everyone on my list took it’s toll on both my available time and energy, but I did manage to finish off my list. I think I got some pretty thoughtful gifts for everyone. Amazon gave me a scare, as a big order with gifts for quite a few people seemed like it wouldn’t be in on time, but they pulled through for me with a few days to spare.

We started our holidays/lay-off from work yesterday. We had an event Thursday night, so I took an extra day off in order to attend it. It’s getting harder and harder each year for me to switch between sleep schedules when I get time off, and it’s been rough the past few days.

I work midnights, so most of the time I live like a vampire – active at night, asleep during the day. When we’re off for any length of time, I, of course, want to switch my schedule to something more normal, and that throws me for a loop for the first few days. I’m seriously sleep deprived right now, which means I have moments of manic energy, followed by a crash that has me dragging my ass or laying it on the couch for hours. I’m hoping that all evens out soon, as I haven’t managed to accomplish much over the last couple of days.

As far as the writing goes, I was managing to keep up with my goals up until yesterday. I was crashing hard and had plans for the evening. I did get through some chores that I’d promised would be done yesterday, but only barely. As a result, my writing suffered, and I’ve built up a small deficit.

I’ve chipped away at that deficit a bit today, and truthfully, it’s not all that much, I should be able to get back on track by Monday. I don’t want to get in the habit of doing that, though, blowing off writing with the intent of making up for it later. It would be too easy to fall too far behind, which I think would get depressing enough to make me give up and quit.

Since I’m off work for the next three weeks, I’m going to try and up my daily word goal from 1000 words per day, to at least 1500. That will eat up what’s left of my deficit, and should get me close to finishing the manuscript by mid-January when I have to go back to work.

I’m not a big fan of Xmas, it’s not my favourite time of year, but this year, it doesn’t seem to be bothering me as much as usual. I’m looking forward to seeing how everyone likes their gifts, and to spending some quiet time with the family (the one in my home, not the extended fam… it’s never quiet time with them), and seeing some friends over the holidays.

If you’re still reading this, I want to wish all of you a very happy Holiday Season and the best of the upcoming New Year.

I should have at least one more post before NYE, so I’ll let you know then how the writing’s going over the Xmas holidays.
